Isn't it true that most accidents and fires and such happen during the holidays? Well, that was almost us yesterday.
The kids were playing in H.'s room. H. ran out and yelled, "My light just burned out and there's smoke coming down from the light." T. and I yelled to him to get out...so, of course he ran back in and turned the light off...anyways...
I ran in there and grabbed I. and A. and shut the door.
T. went in after I'd gotten the children out. He took the bulb down and sure enough, it had faulted and would've caused a fire had the kids not been in there at that time. I emailed the company yesterday, but, of course, it is a holiday.
H. had to sleep on the floor in the other bedroom last night. H.'s room is still COMPLETELY stinky. It smells like burnt electrical wiring and plastic. We've had an air purifier going in there for more than 24 hrs. We had all the windows in the house open all day yesterday. I don't know how to get that smell out...and smells aren't just smells, they are molecules of something, I just don't know what. Those fluorescent bulbs have mercury in them, too, so I hope that that didn't leak out all over, too...

That is scary! I'd be curious to know why it happened when the company contacts you. Was the wattage to high for the lamp or what?
I don't think so. We have those bulbs all over the house. Also, H.'s have been in for more than a year, I think. Usually when they burn out, they just stop working.
Yikes! Glad everyone is okay.
One of the kids busted one in the office once...it was crazy. Stinky greenish fog smoke oozed out for a while. I know they are suppose to be green or whatever, but they scare me a bit.
That's creepy! Let us know what you find out. Maybe it wasn't the light - maybe it was faulty wiring. Did you have someone come check it out for you?
Surprisingly, the company never wrote me back...neither the Canada office, nor the USA office.
The wiring isn't faulty, as far as we can tell. No other lights have ever burned. We have another brand of fluorescents in there now.
It took about 2 weeks to get that horrible smell out, but it is not noticeable any more...and H. is sleeping in there now...just kidding, he's singing "I am a Child of God" because he said he can't stop thinking about a bird like the one on UP and it is freakin' him out!
